  16. SYMPTOMS

  19. When a User who was once a member of the Administrators group is
  20. changed to another group (removed from the Administrators group), the
  21. Connect to Printer option in Print Manager may disappear.
  22.  
  23. If the User has never logged on to their account while a member of
  24. Administrators, this problem does not occur. Once that account has
  25. been used at least once and the User is then placed in another group,
  26. the Connect To Printer option disappears.
  27.  
  28. RESOLUTION
  29. ==========

  31. There are currently two workarounds to this problem:
  32.  
  33.  - Use Create Printer rather than Connect to Printer and to specify the
  34.    network path to this printer. The disadvantage to this is that the
  35.    printer driver will have to be loaded locally.
  36.  
  37.    -or-
  38.  
  39.  - Recreate the account for this user without first giving this user
  40.    Administrator rights. The disadvantage of this is that all the users
  41.    settings, personal program groups, and other customized information
  42.    will have to be recreated.

  47. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1
  48. and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this
  49. problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge
  50. Base as it becomes available.

  55. Steps to Reproduce Problem
  56. --------------------------
  57.  
  58. 1. Create 2 users in the User Manager. For reference, let us call
  59.    one user User1, the other User2. Place User1 in the Power Users
  60.    group, User2 in Administrators.
  61.  
  62. 2. Log off, then log on as User2. Open Print Manager and note the
  63.    availability of the option to Connect To Printer on the Printer menu.
  64.  
  65. 3. Log off, then log on as User1. Again, note the availability of the
  66.    Connect To Printer option. This user, as a member of the Power Users
  67.    group, demonstrates the fact that a Power User should see this option.
  68.  
  69. 4. Log off, then log on as Administrator. Remove User2 from the
  70.    Administrators group and place this user into the Power Users group.
  71.  
  72. 5. Log off, then log on as User2. Note that the option to Connect To
  73.    Printer is no longer available.
